Riding with the Family

Bikes are a great way to get around and a fun activity for the whole family.

As a responsible parent one of the things you should be doing is supervising the family’s early exposure to traffic. As children migrate from playing in the back garden or enclosed park the next opportunity is to ride down the driveway and onto the road. As we all appreciate the road can be a very dangerous place but a well developed awareness of traffic and its dangers is an important part of growing up to become safe road users.

A great way to introduce this challenge and manage learning of skills required to negotiate the risks is to ride as a family. This way you can introduce specific challenges to less experienced riders as they are ready for them and when you are nearby to share your experience.

As children grow older and more responsible they are capable of riding further and closer to adult speeds. Having a geared bike will help children ride with a supervising adult and also let them experience more challenging terrain such as hills as gears help you overcome this. It’s great for building fitness too.

If you are looking to take the family with you on a cycling challenge perhaps you might like to consider the Spring Cycle on Sunday the 16th of October. It's a great way to explore some of the cycling routes around Sydney or perhaps even ride over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. For more details click the ad below.
