Balance Bikes
When ride a bike for the first time they have multiple challenges to face. Steering to go where you want to go, avoiding obstacles and stopping, balancing and the challenge of propelling themselves can combine to making it very difficult.
Strangely one of the biggest challenges is actually the need to propel themselves and this can absorb so much of their attention that they neglect steering, stopping and general awareness... As they get bigger and stronger pedalling becomes easier to master but in the meanwhile they can practice their steering and balance using a balance bike. A well chosen balance bike is light and easy to steer with large wheels. Your child should be able to stand over the seat and as they can already walk and balance when they do that you will find that they quickly master balancing to avoid failing over and steering to avoid obstacles without much intervention on your part. Here is one customers experience with a balance bike.
At Hornsby Cycles we’ve seen many master the balance necessary to scoot unaided within 20 minutes – provided they can stand over the seat of a balance bike.

We find that children can use and enjoy a balance bike often until they are of a size to properly fit a typical 16 inch wheel bike, bypassing the need for a 12 inch bike, often bypassing the need for training wheels and postponing the challenge of pedalling until they are somewhat stronger. We stock a number of brands, mostly to give you the best possible colour range for Boy, Girl and gender neutral colour alternatives.
To your average pre-schooler a balance bike is a bike – no doubt about it and the ease with which they can ride it and enjoy it makes it a fantastic experience for them. If you have any doubt about how far a balance bike can go check out this link on Youtube.
